Brow Lift Procedure
A brow lift, or forehead lift, is a surgical procedure that can restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the area above the eyes. A brow lift can also address a number of the signs of facial aging, such as vertical lines (frown lines) between the brows and creases or deep lines in the forehead. With brow lift surgery, the team at our San Diego surgical center can elevate drooping eye brows to create a more youthful, more alert appearance. Left untreated, a sagging brow line can impair vision and lead to a tired or annoyed appearance.
At Moradi MD in San Diego, Dr. Amir Moradi can perform an endoscopic brow lift procedure to restore a youthful look to the brow area. Interested patients are advised to contact Moradi MD to schedule a courtesy consultation.
What is a Brow Lift?
There are two major brow lift categories: Endoscopic and Open.
Endoscopic Brow Lift Surgery
At our state-of-the-art San Diego surgical facility, most of the brow lifts we perform are endoscopic. An endoscopic brow lift is the most current procedure to lift and reposition the eyebrows and forehead. During this treatment, tiny incisions are placed in the scalp. Through these incisions, a small endoscope (fiber optic camera) is placed. This camera is used to transmit images to a television screen, allowing for a clear view of the muscles and tissue beneath the skin.
Using another instrument, inserted through a separate incision, the forehead skin is lifted and the muscles and underlying tissues are altered to produce a smoother appearance. The eyebrows may also be lifted and secured into their higher position by sutures beneath the skin’s surface. Using the endoscopic camera in conjunction with surgical tools, Dr. Moradi is able to alter the brow line with unparalleled precision and control. The result is an improved appearance with less downtime following surgery.
Open Brow Lift Surgery
Open brow lifts are typically performed with incisions that extend over the scalp. This can be cause for concern for some patients, as it may result in numbness behind the incisions. In some cases, this numbness can last up to one year. Additionally, there is a greater risk of visible scarring following treatment. However, many patients find that the advantages of this procedure outweigh the potential downsides, as the open incision technique allows for a predictable and consistent outcome in the forehead and frown lines.
Patients interested in brow lift surgery are encouraged to speak with our team regarding their options. At our San Diego practice, we pride ourselves on providing patients with the information they need to make informed decisions regarding their treatment. We recommend the endoscopic technique in nearly all cases, but an open brow lift may be a suitable alternative for some patients.
A brow lift is typically performed on patients aged 40-60. This is because brow lift surgery is intended to reduce the visible signs of aging; however, a brow lift can be performed on any person that is uncomfortable with the way his or her forehead and brow look, or whose face shows signs of aging. Candidates should be in good physical health, refrain from smoking, and have realistic expectations of the results. Brow lifts are commonly combined with complementary surgeries, such as eyelid surgery, neck lift surgery, or Ma href=”/facial-surgery/face-lift/”>facelift surgery. Additionally, targeted skincare regimens can extend the results of these procedures.
Complications are rare and usually minor when a brow lift is performed by our certified surgical team. In rare cases, the nerves that control eyebrow movement may be injured on one or both sides, resulting in a loss of ability to raise the eyebrows or wrinkle the forehead. Loss of sensation along the incision line is common, especially with the classic forehead lift procedure. This is usually temporary, but may be permanent in some patients. As with all surgical procedures, the risk of infection and bleeding are very rare, but are possibilities. Risk of complications can be reduced by closely following post-operative instructions after surgery.
Patients can expect some bruising and swelling during the recovery period. Incision site pain is usually minimal, but can be managed with medication, if necessary. Endoscopic brow lift patients typically experience less of the itching sensation felt by patients who have undergone a classic, open brow lift. Patients may return to restricted activity approximately 10-14 days following the procedure, and upon doctor’s approval. Vigorous physical activity should be limited for several weeks following treatment. This includes heavy housework, sex, and any activity that increases blood pressure. Prolonged exposure to heat or sun should be limited for several months. Most of the visible signs of surgery should fade completely within about three weeks.
