GentleYAG Laser Therapy for Spider Veins

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are thin, reddish-purple veins that resemble spiderwebs. They commonly appear on the face and legs, often clustered on the thigh or below the knee. Medically speaking, spider veins are harmless; however, the appearance of these veins can be frustrating and cause men and women to feel self-conscious. Millions of people suffer from unsightly spider veins, but there is a solution. With GentleYAG laser therapy, offered at the San Diego practice of Moradi MD, we can reduce or eliminate the appearance of spider veins.

Understanding Spider Veins

Spider veins affect as many as 80% of all women and a large percentage of men as well. A number of factors can contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, weight fluctuation, pregnancy and prolonged sitting or standing. These veins are caused by large or swollen blood vessels, and in some cases, can cause discomfort.

Regardless of how a patient developed spider veins, the team at Moradi MD is able to help. Dr. Amir Moradi and his team specialize in spider vein reduction using the “gold standard” of laser procedures: the GentleYAG laser vein treatment. At our San Diego facility, we are fully equipped to provide treatment for this common ailment.

What is the GentleYAG Laser Treatment?

The GentleYAG laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into skin tissue where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the targeted blood vessels. The laser contracts the leg veins, without the bruising often associated with other leg vein treatments. Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of skin with cool air, offering optimal treatment settings with minimal discomfort and side effects.

Deep penetration with minimal scattering of laser energy makes GentleYAG laser therapy ideal for all skin types, particularly tanned and dark skin. Adaptable pulse durations and multiple spot sizes give the GentleYAG leg and facial vein treatment capabilities rivaling pulse dye technology. It is the only laser of its kind patented and FDA cleared for leg vein reduction.

Ideal Candidates for GentleYAG Laser Therapy

Most patients with spider veins are eligible candidates for the GentleYAG laser treatment. Ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Are not pregnant
  • Are not currently on Accutane (isotretinoin) therapy
  • Do not have a history of light-triggered seizures
  • Do not have a history of photosensitivity (allergy or strong sensitivity to light)
  • Do not have implanted medical devices such as pacemakers, cardioverters, etc.

Potential Risks Associated with GentleYAG Laser Treatment

The GentleYAG laser treatment for spider veins offers many benefits, making it an attractive alternative to other types of treatment, such as sclerotherapy. Among these benefits, GentleYAG laser therapy is non-invasive; the skin in not pierced or damaged by needles or injections. While some mild discomfort can be expected (primarily a feeling of heat from the laser), treatment is typically quick and painless. However, as with any medical procedure, some side effects are rare but possible. These can include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Change in skin pigmentation
  • Bruising
  • Blisters

Side effects should not last more than a few days and permanent side effects are extremely rare. The team at our San Diego office is well-versed in GentleYAG laser treatment and will take every precaution to ensure a trouble-free and successful procedure.

Discomfort during the GentleYAG laser treatment can be minimized during the procedure by the intermittent application of ice packs or the application of a topical anesthetic before the procedure begins.

After GentleYAG laser treatment for spider veins is complete, patients are sent home with specific instructions for post-treatment care. Compression stockings or support hosiery will need to be worn for a week after treatment. Strenuous exercise will need to be avoided for the first week, though walking is encouraged.

In order to achieve optimal results, 3-6 treatment sessions, at 6-8 week intervals, may be required. Results can be appreciated 6-8 weeks after treatment.
