Selecting a Surgeon for Natural-Looking Eyelid Surgery

In the past, you may have seen a celebrity who looks strange or unnatural after eyelid surgery. When you choose to undergo blepharoplasty, you need a facial plastic surgeon who will be extremely careful, detailed, and focused on natural results. They should remove just the right amount of excess skin to leave your eyes looking refreshed and youthful but not overly wide or odd.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed to treat saggy eyelids and restore a refreshed, youthful appearance to the eyes. For the upper eyelids, the procedure involves removing a very small crescent of skin at the eyelid crease and closing the incisions with tiny, delicate sutures. In some cases, the surgery involves tightening specific muscles. On the lower eyelids, the procedure can remove excess lower eyelid fat. For “Asian eyelid surgery,” the procedure involves creating a visible crease in the eyelid.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

All eyelid surgeries in Carlsbad & Oceanside, CA, performed at Moradi MD are customized for the individual patient. Some patients may require both upper and lower eyelid correction, but the majority of people are candidates for upper eyelid surgery.

Upper eyelid surgery

The procedure is performed with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation and is not painful or stressful to experience. The quantity of eyelid skin surgically removed is of ultimate importance, as you want a refreshed, natural look, not an obvious, wide-eyed appearance. After the sliver of skin is removed, the incisions are closed with delicate stitches, and the surgery is complete.

Lower eyelid surgery

For the lower eyelids, an incision is placed inside the lower lid so that the excess fat can be removed or repositioned. A lower lid lift does not necessarily improve dark circles, but an additional procedure can resolve this aesthetic problem.

Are you a candidate for eyelid surgery?

One of the first signs of facial aging appears in the upper eyelids. As the years pass, the skin stretches, losing the firm flexibility of youth. This condition can be so extreme that it affects peripheral vision, in which case the surgery may be covered by your health insurance policy. If you struggle with any of the following aesthetic conditions, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery:

  • Puffy upper eyelids
  • Hooded eyes
  • Loose folds of skin on the upper lids
  • Excess skin makes it difficult to see clearly
  • The crease in your eyelids is hidden
  • Stretched skin makes it difficult to apply makeup
  • You have puffy areas beneath your eyes
  • Your lower lids droop downward, showing the whites of the eyes

Recovery from eyelid surgery

Recovery from eyelid surgery is usually uneventful and fast. Most people need only over-the-counter medication to stay comfortable. Initially, you will need to keep your head elevated and can apply cool compresses to help reduce any swelling.

Wear sunglasses when venturing outdoors, as your eyes will feel sensitive to light. Take it easy for a week, avoiding vigorous activities, but feel free to take walks. Avoid bending over, lifting any heavy object (including children and pets), or straining.

Will I have scars?

Any incision will leave a scar. The beauty of upper eyelid surgery is that the incision is placed in the natural crease and, once healed, is virtually invisible. On the lower lid, the incision is placed inside the eyelid and will not be visible. If your eyelids have “lateral hooding,” the incision may extend to the sides of the eyes, placed in the smile lines and hidden from view once healed.
