A tear trough deformity is the hollow groove beneath the eyes that casts shadows and creates a tired, aged look. Dr. Amir Moradi corrects it with dermal fillers, fat transfer, or eyelid surgery at his San Diego area practice.
What Causes Tear Trough Deformity?
A tear trough deformity can develop with age or appear early due to genetics. Several factors combine to create the hollow, shadowed look.
Common causes include:
- Age-related loss of fat and volume in the under-eye and cheek
- Genetics, which can make the groove visible even in younger patients
- Bulging fat pads that create bags above a hollow trough
- Thin under-eye skin that reveals underlying blood vessels
- The tear trough ligament, which tethers the skin and deepens the groove
- Gradual bone changes around the eye socket
